Abstract

Biological collections are authentic archives of life on our planet. Among them, insect collections are particularly valuable, as they account for nearly 80 % of global biodiversity. In Mexico, despite its rich biological diversity, a large portion of the entomofauna has yet to be documented, which hinders the conservation and study of these organisms. Each specimen in the collection provides information on the collection site and date, habitat, and capture method data that enable the analysis of ecological patterns, environmental changes and species life histories. Historical specimens are often used to discover and describe new species; however, while these collections face various challenges, they remain an important source of knowledge for taxonomy, ecology and biodiversity conservation.
